DSCN2233Unconditional surrender or aka Kissing Sailor is here to stay for another 10 years.

The Sarasota City Commisioners voted 3-2 to accept the risk of a potential copy right issue  and to let the statue stay.

The City of Sarasota feels confident that

Time Inc probably will not challenge the bayfront statue. Steward Johnson’s statue of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s  famous photograph of a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square. is considered public domaine.  However ..just in case the city does have a $400,000 fund to fight any legal battles over copy right issues. Now you may be asking –  why would the City of Sarasota put money aside for such a thing . Well,  this is where the story gets good { sentimental }.

A World War II veteran intends to buy the “Unconditional Surrender” statue for $500,000 and, ultimately, donate it to the City of Sarasota. About $400,000 of that will be kept aside for three years just in case.

Unconditional Surrender is located in our Bayfront Park off Tamiami trail just before the Ringling bridge to

St. Armands and Longboat and Lido Key.
